The most popular of Barnby's partsongs, Sweet and Low was first published in 1865. Scored for SATB choir with Piano reduction, it is a setting of an extract from The Princess , a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Sir Joseph Barnby (1838-1896) was an English composer and conductor. He was a chorister at York Minster before studying at the RAM. He later became director of Music at Eton and Principal of the Guildhall School of Music.
