Dog Days reflect the composer's discomfort with the high humidity and high tempertures often encountered in July and August; air so heavy and heat so oppressive that one can barely move. The composition reflects this climate in a slow, harmonically static language interrupted by whispered commentaries by the choir. The Trois Gymnopedies of Eric Satie served as a musical model.
