Joseph Haydn – Quartet in D major (Hob.III:8) "con laute" + Cassations and Sonata
This exceptional edition brings together four important chamber works by Joseph Haydn, especially valuable for mandolinists and lovers of galant-style music. Included are the Quartet in D major "con laute" (Hob.III:8) in five movements, two Cassations in C major (Hob.III:6) and B-flat major (Hob.III:1), and the Sonata in F major (Hob.IV:F2).
These works likely stem from Haydn’s encounter with the lutenist Joachim Bernhard Hagen around 1755, with some being early versions of later string quartets (such as Op.1 No.6). They were first published by Breitkopf in 1770.
Stylistically, they bridge galant elegance and instrumental clarity, making them highly suitable for performance on the mandolin. The 18th century saw a flourishing of the instrument, especially in Vienna – home to mandolin works by Mozart, Kozeluch, Hummel, and Giuliani.
Rather than mere transcriptions, these pieces represent a natural expansion of the mandolin and soprano lute repertoire. A historical and musical treasure for classical mandolinists and chamber musicians alike.
