George Lewis – Spinner (for solo cello)
Spinner is a powerful solo cello work by George Lewis, written for and premiered by cellist Mariel Roberts. The piece draws inspiration from the mythological Fates—Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos—who spin, measure, and cut the thread of life.
Lewis uses an innovative combination of extended techniques including delicate glissandi, rhythmic Superball bounces, nuanced bow pressure, and harmonic arpeggios to create a richly textured and expressive sound world. The result is both technically demanding and emotionally evocative, showcasing the cello’s full range and versatility.
Premiered at National Sawdust in New York, Spinner is also featured on Roberts’ acclaimed solo album Cartography.
A compelling addition to the contemporary cello repertoire for advanced performers and adventurous listeners alike.
