William Henry Squire (1871-1963) was a British musician, famed as a virtuoso cellist, composer, and educator. He studied Cello and composition at the Royal College of Music, later becoming Professor of Cello there, and was also an early examiner for the ABRSM, writing several works as examination pieces. His compositions have since become staples of the instrument’s repertoire. Slumber Song (Schlummerlied) was written for solo Cello and orchestra, and first performed by the composer at the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts in 1899. It has been arranged here for Cello and Piano by the composer.
