Andreas Hammerschmidt’s vocal works are known to the wider public today mainly through only a few pieces such as "Machet die Tore weit" or "Also hat Gott die Welt geliebet". Hammerschmidt’s output encompasses a wide range of the most varied musical forms: sacred concertos and cantatas, motets and instrumental pieces, and secular vocal works. Like Schütz, Hammerschmidt’s music is inspired primarily by the text and it is also musically refined. This CD is the second recording with the ensemble Gli Scarlattisti under Jochen Arnold. It presents works by Andreas Hammerschmidt and his contemporary Johann Rosenmüller. These vocal compositions for Passion and Easter show that bothcomposers rank alongside the greatest Protestant-Lutheran church music composers before Johann Sebastian Bach, including Heinrich Schütz and Johann Hermann Schein.
