Bach’s cantata BWV 13 [from the third cycle of Leipzig cantatas] was first performed on the 2nd Sunday after Epiphany in 1726. This work is marked especially by its scoring, unusual in Bach’s church music, in which the strings are joined by tworecorders and an oboe da caccia: these wind instruments are used to convey the dominant affections of “sighing” and “pain” in the individual arias. In accordance with the intimate character of this cantata the four-part vocal ensemble is used only inthe chorale at the end of the work.
