Johann Sebastian Bach – Flute Sonatas BWV 1030–1035 for Two Flutes (Without Keyboard)

The transverse flute is one of J.S. Bach’s favourite solo instruments in his chamber music repertoire. Although the origins of several flute sonatas remain uncertain, they continue to be celebrated as core works of the Baroque era. This special edition offers a practical arrangement of Bach’s flute sonatas for two flutes, eliminating the need for a harpsichord or keyboard accompaniment.

Flautist and educator Cathrin Ambach has skillfully transformed the basso continuo or harpsichord part into a second flute part, allowing both flautists to perform at a comparable musical level while preserving the style and integrity of Bach’s writing. The first flute part is identical to the Urtext version from the “New Bach Edition,” ensuring scholarly accuracy.

Two volumes are available:

  • BA10961: Contains BWV 1030, 1032, 1034, and 1035 – definitively attributed to Bach

  • BA10962: Contains BWV 1020, 1031, and 1033 – attributed to Bach, but of uncertain authorship

Ideal for: Lessons, amateur ensembles, and concert performance
Highlights:

  • First flute part from the “New Bach Edition” Urtext

  • Continuo part artfully adapted for second flute

  • Playable without keyboard accompaniment
