'The Rhapsody appears to follow the example of Liszt: it is a bipartite form comprising slow and fast movements (Adagio molto - Allegretto, Allegro), in which a large role is given to the virtuoso, improvisatory passages of the solo instrument, and the inspiration of Romantic Hungarian melodies and rhythms. Bartók wrote the first version for solo piano between October and December 1904. In 1905 Bartók reworked the rhapsody for piano and orchestra, under the title 'Morceau de concert'. The first two concert performances of the piano and orchestra version were conducted by Jen Hubay in Budapest on 14 and 15 November 1909.
