Alec Wilder was one of those unusual composers who managed to bridge the gap between the worlds of 'serious' and 'popular' music without losing credibility in either. Set specifically for school and local theatre groups, The Lowland Sea is based on memories of the sea - the title is taken from the shanty 'The Golden Vanity' - and it therefore uses shanty tunes of the late 19th century combined with jazz influences. With its story of a couple in love separated by the young man's long sea voyage, the opera offers an hour of light entertainment for all audiences. This is the Schirmer edition of the Vocal Score, with a libretto by Arnold Sundgaard (English only).
