Felix Mendelssohn can claim the credit ofhaving ushered in the Bach-Renaissance with his arrangement and performance of the St Matthew Passion. It was revived for the first time in the Berlin Singakademie on 11 March 1829, one hundred years after its premiere inLeipzig’s Thomaskirche. A second arrangement was performed in Leipzig in 1841.
