Protestant music in the period after 1750 is unimaginable without the cantatas of Gottfried August Homilius. They were extremely popular in many parts of German-speaking Europe and Homilius enjoyed a reputation as the "best church music com-poser". To this day, many manuscripts reflect the previous popularity and wide circulation of this music, whose rediscovery has now begun.
