Although every other nation could make the same claim, it is nonetheless a fact that, especially Polish Christmas songs possess a very special liveliness and intimacy and they are of great importance to the cultural history of this country ... In the oldest Polish Christmas songs ... one hears the echo of Gregorian chant; some of the other beautiful melodies originated in the Renaissance.
