John Harbison (b. 1938) is an American composer who has written for every type of concert genre, including symphonies, operas, and large choral works, and who is known for his lyrical and wide range. He cites his influences as Bach, Stravinsky, and Jazz, but his Piano Concerto (1978), with its two free, expressive movements, could almost be described as Chopin-esque. Dedicated to Robert Millar, it was commissioned by the American Composers Orchestra. As the Piano is no longer the dominant medium in the musical world, it is the composer’s intent to provide a work that can start a new future for this incredible instrument. Originally scored for Solo Piano and Orchestra, this arrangement has been transcribed for two Pianos.
