While his contemporary Paul Hindemith found new approaches to composition, Gál remained rooted in the Germanic tradition. The Sonata clearly follows in the footsteps of the great masters Brahms and Reger, and though traditional inidiom is less complex and complicated than comparable works of these composers. The Sonata is available on CD together with the two Clarinet Sonatas by Brahms.
