Judging from the scope and scoring of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s hymn of thanks "Danket dem Herrn" [1785] and his "Mache dich auf, werde licht" [CV 97.001] for the investiture of a Hamburg clergyman, it can be concluded that these works were intended for a magnificent performance. Both were considered lost, but now they have been published in first editions. The musical language of the hymn of thanks for friendship is strongly reminiscent of Haydn’s Oratorio The Creation. According to a remark in the autograph score, following the tenor aria Schon schimmern durch graulichte Nebel von Ferne the well-known piece for double choir, Heilig Wq 217 [Carus 33.217], can be inserted.
