Josef Rheinberger, Professor for piano and composition at the Munich Conservatory, was forced to end his career as a pianist already at the beginning of the 1870s. Over the years a chronic inflammation in his right hand plagued him continually, but nevertheless this inspired him to compose one of his most beautiful collections of piano music: the studies for piano for the left hand only an interesting and valuable musical contribution for training and study purposes.
