A Dragon's Tale – The Legend of the Kraków Dragon in Music
Filip Ceunen’s A Dragon’s Tale is a vivid musical retelling of the Polish legend of the Wawel Dragon – a terrifying beast that once haunted the city of Kraków, devouring livestock and demanding human sacrifices. Despite many brave knights’ efforts to slay the creature, it was the clever young shoemaker Skuba who ultimately defeated it by tricking it into eating a sheep filled with sulphur. The dragon drank so much water from the river that it exploded – and Kraków was freed.
Awarded first prize in the 2023 VLAMO International Composition Contest, this work skillfully captures the drama, suspense, and triumph of the story. The music shifts between ominous tension and heroic celebration, vividly portraying the legendary tale with flair and imagination.
A Dragon’s Tale is perfect for concert bands or youth ensembles looking for a storytelling piece that offers musical challenges and expressive opportunities.
