Fanny Hensel – Easter Sonata for Piano – Urtext Edition with Facsimile
Long hidden in plain sight, Fanny Hensel’s Easter Sonata is finally given the recognition it deserves. Composed in 1828, this piano sonata was long misattributed to her brother, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. It wasn't until 2010 that musicologist Angela Mace Christian conclusively identified Hensel as the true composer.
Now, Bärenreiter presents the first Urtext edition of the Easter Sonata, based on Hensel’s original autograph manuscript, which had been privately held for many years and is now housed in the Robert Owen Lehman Collection.
This elegant two-volume edition includes:
-
Volume 1: The critical edition of the sonata with scholarly commentary (English)
-
Volume 2: A complete colour facsimile of Fanny Hensel’s autograph score
The layout is designed to allow both volumes to be placed side by side for detailed study. A richly informative foreword (in English and German) by Mendelssohn expert R. Larry Todd recounts the fascinating history and rediscovery of this remarkable work.
