This composition is a single work comprising 28 distinct parts, inspired by ancient lunar calendar systems found across the globe. In antiquity, cultures in both the East and the West divided the celestial sphere into 28 uneven sections, known as the 28 Mansions, based on the moon’s phases. These divisions served as celestial markers for tracking the movement of the moon and approximating the sun’s position — a system believed to have originated around 1100 BC and used in China, India, Babylon, Egypt, and Greece.
In our digital era, where regularity and precision are prized, the persistence of this uneven, symbolic system invites reflection. The number 28, possibly seen as a perfect number by many cultures, has retained a special resonance through time. This piece is dedicated to the late composer Toshi Ichiyanagi, serving as both a tribute and an artistic exploration of ancient cosmology through a contemporary musical lens.
