On Claudy Banks is a quiet response to the musical and lyrical content of a traditional folk song of the same name about a woman mourning the supposed loss of her lover at war with the Spanish. Hymn-like outer sections arebalanced by a somewhat sinister, brooding central section but the overriding mood of the piece is one of peaceful melancholy.
