Towards the end of his life the Spanish painter Goya completed a series of works now known as 'The Black Paintings'. 'Saturno' is the most horrifying of them all, and the composer writes: 'The piece makes a dramatic use ofextremes of register and dynamics. According to mythology, Saturn is devouring his own sun and fearful of being usurped.'
