Brahms's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra Op.77 begins, unusually, with a gentle Allegro ma non troppo in 3/4 time which becomes more virtuosic as it progresses. This is followed by a whimsical Adagio which begins with wind solos. The final movement opens with the soloist playing a fast fanfare-like theme in thirds with minimal accompaniment. The orchestra burst in after eight bars to answer the violin and the movement becomes a joyful yet frantic Finale.
