George Benjamin: Divisions – for piano four hands
Divisions is George Benjamin's first substantial work for piano four hands, arising from a form of music-making the composer has enjoyed since his youth. Composed in 2024–25, the approximately 14-minute work was premiered by Benjamin himself alongside his longstanding collaborator, pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard.
Two pianists – one instrument
The title Divisions refers to a term found in 17th-century English keyboard music, where it described a set of variations. Here, however, the word also refers to the physical division between two performers sharing a single piano. Their separation, interaction and exchange become fundamental elements of the musical conception.
From repeated notes to intricate harmonic landscapes
The work opens with quiet yet insistent repeated notes, from which fragments of melody gradually begin to emerge. These are followed by increasingly rich clouds of harmony, with different musical strands appearing simultaneously and being placed in juxtaposition.
A slowly moving background provides continuity, but its relative calm is repeatedly disturbed by cascades and rippling gestures. The result is an intricate dialogue in which rhythm, texture, harmony and the distribution of material between the two pianists all contribute to the character of the work.
A major contemporary work for piano duet
Divisions represents an important addition to Benjamin's piano music, following works including Shadowlines and Piano Figures, which were also conceived for Pierre-Laurent Aimard. This edition is an exciting choice for advanced pianists and professional duos seeking contemporary repertoire that explores the unique possibilities of two performers sharing one instrument.
